Gribbon who heads up the hotel workers union UNITE-HERE had hoped to block the compacts from being approved by the legistature without additional provisions expanding the powers of unions to organize in tribal casinos. Despite mounting a full on six month assault that began in January and building a coalition that included Detroit casino syndicators Barwest LLC, Las Vegas interests, a broad spectrum of Labor interests, women and others, Gribbon failed to make a difference. All powerful Labor has met its match in the gaming tribes after ruling California politics for decades.
John Myers at Capitol Notes reports:
"And while there's still some time to see if this actually happens, that time is limited. A referendum must be submitted for the ballot within 90 days of the statute being enacted (a timeline triggered by Schwarzenegger's signature earlier this week). And it would take about 434,000 signatures per casino compact... or more than 1.7 million... to get four separate ballot measure referendums qualified. That would take a lot of money; but then again, all of the interests involved have deep pockets. And the political battle, if it happens, could be epic."
