Michael J. Malik, Sr., a Detroit-based casino syndicator is among the largest individual contributors to California State Sen. Patricia Wiggins (D-Santa Rosa) 2010 Campaign Re-Election Committee this year. Malik is one of only two individuals to contribute $2,000 to Wiggin's re-election committee; and he is the top out of state donor to Wiggins Committee overall -- PAC and non-PAC.
In 2006 Malik's company Barwest LLC, a Detroit casino syndicate, was fined on two counts of violating California's political reform laws. Malik paid a $6,500 fine for failing to report a $26,600 contribution to then Congressman Richard Pombo's County GOP Committee. It was only when California's Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) approached Malik almost a year later that he disclosed having made the contribution.
It has been rumored that officials at the City of Barstow are concerned because Malik's political and lobbying practices are under investigation again by the FPPC (as are those of his partners and lobbyists). TVT has also learned that among the issues are two contributions Malik made to Sen. Wiggins campaign in the Fall of 2006 which he again failed to report to the FPPC and which exceeded the aggregate amount he could contribute to Wiggins in the last election cycle. Malik was the top out of state donor to Wiggins 2006 campaign.
After making those contributions to Wiggins in October 2006, Wiggins agreed to sponsor SB 157, a bill that if passed would have ratified Indian gaming agreements for two casinos in Barstow which Malik has contracts to build and manage.
