"The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians was shocked when it received a letter from the Department of the Interior (DOI) on Friday, January 4, stating that DOI had completed its evaluation and was rejecting the Tribe's application to takeland into trust in Barstow even though DOI failed to allow the completion of necessary studies..."
The BarWest release goes on to report:
"In dismissing the Los Coyotes application, Interior asserted that the Tribe should build a gaming facility on or near the Los Coyotes reservation..."The release concludes with:
"The DOI press release and the letter to the Los Coyotes can be viewed at the news room at the barstowcasinosandresort.com."However, as of this post there is no "news room" on that Web site which was developed and is maintained by BarWest's PR consultant Tom Shields of Marketing Resource Group (Lansing, Michigan).

It does seem a bit funny that the Secretary who is outspoken against off reservation gaming has implemented new rules to stop off reservation gaming even though it is expressely allowed under IGRA. Now of course I am all for anything that stops the development of Shoshone land by Non-Shoshone but this is just bad all around. I foresee a lot of lawsuits in the future, seems to me that the Secretary has overstepped his authority, as he already has a clear and outlined policy to follow in regards to off-reservation gaming. Well at least things are still business as usual in the government, screw the indians anyway you can. Keep the poor ones poor and take all you can from the rich ones.
BarWest has insisted distance wasn't going to be a factor in winning approvals for their Barstow casinos.
Those under the BarWest spell (chiefly Mayor Dale) have ignored the cautions and counsel of others as well as the various early warning signs out of the Interior Department (including warning letters to these very tribes) that indicated this was a big problem.
For the last seven years Mayor Dale has made BarWest's casinos the cornerstone of his plans for economic recovery in Barstow; and he's spent precious time and money advancing BarWest's schemes ... now what? Mayor Dale's plans for the economic recovery of Barstow have failed time and time again.
Mayor Dale is like all the other Republicans: for the last seven years he has made decisions that have made the good ol' boyz richer at high cost to all the other voters. Is Barstow any better off today than we were before Lawrence Dale and George Bush took office in 2000?
We gave them two shots to get it right and they have failed.
Enough already!
I don't knwo what you are talking about. I went to the web site clicked on "Latest News"
and up came the press release and copies of the letters to the Tribes. Do you just make
this stuff up?
The press release issued by Tom Shields PR firm says go to "News Room." But of course there is no "News Room" menu item anywhere on the poorly crafted Web site. (A web site already full of ambiguity, conflciting details, and flat-out incorrect facts).
Note: Shield's Web site indicates the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe's ancetral territory was to the "west" of Barstow. WRONG!
Further, there is no reference to this latest news on the Web site's home page where readers are provided with a list of seven "Latest News" stories.
Shields and his team have proven they are inept when it comes to the Web... and at getting Indian casinos built!
