According to reports made available via the Center for Public Integrity:
In 2002, Michael J. Malik, Sr., John Lufkins, the Dykema Gossett law firm and others associated with the unorthodox scheme to locate a Bay Mills Indian Community casino 350 miles from the tribe's reservation; contributed thousands of dollars to then-Michigan Governor John Engler -- the funds were directed to Engler's little known "leadership PAC." It was during 2002 that the parties lobbied Engler to reverse his long-held policy on gambling expansion and grant the Bay Mills Indian Community an agreement to establish a far-off gambling hall in Port Huron, MI.
Just months later, Engler's chief negotiator, R. Lance Boldrey would leave the Governor's office and join the Dykema Gossett law firm. Boldrey would include among his clients Malik and the Bay Mills Indian Community.
