Barwest, LLC a Detroit-based casino syndication bankrolling plans to develop and manage two off-reservation Indian Casinos in Barstow, CA, apparently fronted at least $10,000 in travel costs for Alaska's Representative Don Young in 2005.
Sometime early in 2005, Rep. Young traveled aboard private aircraft on Barwest's dime and then reimbursed the casino syndication $5,817 on January 25, 2005 to cover some of those costs.
Later in the year, Barwest principal Michael Malik fronted the costs for Rep. Young's travel aboard private aircraft once again. That time Barwest's principal fronted costs of which Rep. Young reports he reimbursed Malik at least $3,978 on October 7, 2005.
The purpopse and destinations of those trips are unclear; which raises questions about why Barwest was reimbursed in one case and Michael Malik was reimbursed in another.
On top of the travel expenses, Barwest's principals ranked among the top 5 contributors to Alaska Rep. Young's campaign committee during the 2006 election cycle.

In fact, in between flights on Barwest's plane, its principals and family contributed $16,000 to Rep. Young's campaign -- and helped make May 23, 2005 Rep. Young's highest grossing fundraising day of the entire two-year 2006 election cycle.
Since announcing their plans for Barstow in 2003, Barwest reports only $80,000 in federal lobbying expenses.
